Jade
Published in Paperback by Gem Books Publishing (October, 2001)
Author: Fred Ward
Average review score:

Informative and nice pictures
There are not too many books on Jade, so I'm glad I found this one. It was pretty informative and had very nice photographs illustrating the author's points. It's worth it if you're in the jewelry business and want to know more about jade, and it's good for any jade collector. I found the information to be accurate.

Buy this book!!!
Like all of the Fred Ward Gem Books Series, this is an instant classic. It features National Geographic quality photos, no surprise since Ward has photographed/authored a number of articles for that magazine. My favorite section deals with the jade from Meso-America, used by the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec civilizations. But it also contains much on Burmese and Chinese jade. This is simply an outstanding book. Buy it.

Jam Jam Jam With Carlos Santana
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (July, 2000)
Author: Carlos Santana

Play till your fingers fall off! This is a blast!
I picked this up for working on my timing and feel, this is VERY well done, well ok ... the 2nd pack of tracks with actual guitar parts is, so so. I've spent hours just on Tracks '2' and '4' and I have to say this is the most fun I've had playing with out a real band around. You can work on your tone, timing, feel, get inventive, play it note for note and do not need to have other musicians going over and over it with you.
I'd also recommend the Dire Straits version but it's much harder to play along with. I will be buying more in this series for sure!

Dream come true for learning guitarists and Santana fanatics
Santana has always been my ultimate guitarist idol, and for a book like this to come out, I feel like I've actually had a workshop with Santana himself. It provides a number of easy to interpret tips and recommendations that have not only increased my confidence in improvisation, but also have allowed me to imagine during the play-alongs that I may one day meet a level of playing like Carlos'. My guitar techniques have without a doubt undergone significant improvements. This book includes all the classics, and is a must for any of the other Santana fanatics like me.

Jim Morrison: An Hour for Magic
Published in Paperback by Plexus Publishing (30 November, 2002)
Author: Frank Lisciandro
Average review score:

Great Photo Essay
I love this book! The photographs are spectacular as are the comments that accompany each photo.

Frank Lisciandro "An Hour for Magic"
This book originally came out in 1982, which is when I got my copy of it. It is a very good memoir of Jim Morrison and, tangentially, The Doors by Frank Lisciandro. Lisciandro was one of The Doors' photographers and a close personal friend of Morrison. It is a personal, anecdotal memoir, portraying Morrison as a personal friend, rather than as the Lizard King. I especially like the account of the poetry recording session (that would later become the "American Prayer" poetry album). There is also a very good account of the incident where Paul Rothchild walked out from the production of the "L.A. Woman" album, leaving the Doors to produce that album by themselves with Bruce Botnick. In any event, I highly recommend it.

Jimi Hendrix (A&E Biography)
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (February, 2001)
Author: Rita J. Markel
Average review score:

Jimi Hendrix
I thought this book was very helpful in my everyday life. This book will enforce your mind to think of the capabilities of the guitar. Jimi Hendrix is great and deserves this book about him, that depicts his life story.

Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story
Though a little over a hundred pages of biographical detail is intended largely for advanced elementary grade levels, many an adult with a special interest in Jimi Hendrix's rock music will find themselves reading this biography of the musician's short but notable life. From a poor background in a home marked by an alcoholic mother, Hendrix rose to become a star. Jimi Hendrix details his remarkable story and profound influences on American popular music.

With Me All the Time
This may be a little book, but sooo full of good stuff. The pictures are great and personal. I carry this in my purse and have pulled it out to show people a hundred times. When mad at the world or feeling blue, I read through this book again. For a REAL Buffett fan it is a necessity and I am a REAL Buffett fan. And if someone wants to know something about the Buffett Man, I let them read my book, but I don't let them go to far with it, I want it back.
Absolutely love it!!!

Amazingly Good!
This is one of those small, gift sized books of only a few inches hight and width, so I hadn't expected it to be very good. But, it contains an amazing amount of info in its 78 or so pages. And it has some of the best, if not only, pictures of Jimmy with his wife and kids. The pictures alone are worth the meager cover price.

Joel Whitburn's Rock Tracks: Album Rock Tracks 1981-1995: Modern Rock Tracks 1988-1995
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (March, 1996)
Author: Joel Whitburn
Average review score:

Judge this book by its cover
This book is exactly what it say it is - a compilation of every single that charted on "Billboard's" Album Rock Chart from 1981-1995 and Modern Rock Chart from 1988-1995.

The entries are organized by artist with the following information: Debut Date, Peak Position, Weeks, Album, Pop Chart Peak Position, and Label. In addition, Whitburn provides summaries for the top artists and singles for any given year.

Whether you wanted to know that Meryn Cadell hit #24 with "The Sweater" or needed to know the title to each of Bruce Spingsteen's 40 Album Rock singles, this is the book for you.

For every rock and roller
I bought this book almost (wow) 5 years ago when it went to press, and plus it was my second Record Research book to own. I own a lot of Record Research books now, and this is the definite guide to album tracks that never made the Hot 100, or in any other format. You can find the complete (yet outdated) listings for U2, AC/DC, REM, Psychedelic Furs, you name it.

John Gill: Master of Rock (Climbing Classics , No 2)
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (August, 1998)
Authors: Pat Master of Rock Ament and John Gill
Average review score:

An Engrossing Biography of a Climbing Legend
I own several of Pat Ament's books (including his soul-baring autobiography), and I've enjoyed reading them all. John Gill has become virtually the patron saint of modern bouldering, and the many intriguing photographs in this book amply show why. Simply put, Gill was an entire generation ahead of his time--both in terms of his ability and his recognition of dynamic bouldering as the cutting edge of free climbing.

Ament's writing style here is more straightforward, and less dense, than in his other writings. Rather than attempt to speak for disparate voices, as he does in his Royal Robbins biography, Ament generally lets those voices speak for themselves in this book. The result is an expository style that makes for light, enjoyable reading.

Given the fascination that Ament and Gill share with the spiritual aspects of climbing, one would almost expect Ament to devote much of his attention to Gill's metaphysical philosophies (as did Jon Krakauer in his article on Gill that was later reprinted in _Eiger Dreams_). However, by concentrating on the events of Gill's life and his wanderings among the boulder patches of the American continent, Ament has painted a vivid picture of Gill as Johnny Appleseed, putting up routes--and leaving his legacy--everywhere. I think that is what Gill will most be remembered for, even if his spirituality makes him that much more a climbing guru.

Still the nucleus of American bouldering
I was first exposed to Master of Rock in the seventies with its first publication. Being at the time, a devoted climber and student of style, I spent hundreds of days in the Valley watching John Long, Ron Kauk, John Bachar, Barry Bates, Jim Bridwell, and all, polish their individual styles while applying everything and anything I could grasp from them. I could'nt walk past a door jam without cranking out the requisite finger tip pull-ups. I was 86'ed from Modesto Junior College's campus dozens of times while explaining to the authorities that "my frisbee is on the roof" . . . Imagine my surprise and joy to discover this relatively unknown man through Pat Ament's timely biography of John Gill. I was floored by this person who stayed so low-key yet with so much incredible climbing talent, in a sport not lacking in ego! For this book, Pat Ament deserves my gratitude for it is through this book that I found that element of climbing I was looking for. To me, John G! ill is still the consumate hero of motion on rock, however minimal that motion was. Yes, big walls were beckoning, Yosemite and Tuoloumne test pieces were fondling my emotion, and the smell and taste of my ruck sack permeated my VW Beetle, but to me, none of it mattered without style and art with every climb, as the end result. I grew up as a climber by studying the greatest students and teachers of style and ethics through the seventies. John Gill defined style before I called myself a climber. Thank you Patrick O. Ament for taking time from your study of climbing to write this book and allowing me to discover John Gill. I will always charish knowing who John Gill is now and who he was then.

John Lennon in His Own Words
Published in Paperback by Music Sales Corp (December, 1995)
Authors: John Lennon, Barry Miles, and Pearce Marchbank
Average review score:

Fascinating and pure Lennon.
This book can teach you a lot about John Lennon, from his childhood to his political views. Even if you don't like John Lennon as a person, you can't help but to be moved by his views. He was right in everything he said and is truly missed.

Just what the title says "in his own words"
I read this book "In His Own Words" last summer and I really enjoyed it. I keep it on the nightstand by my bed and look at every now and again. The book isn't one he wrote but a complilation of things he's said and his opinions. The book is funny in some places and well...not funny in others. I recomend this book for anyone who likes John Lennon, or wants to learn a bit about him.

Extremely witty, colorful and entertaining bio.
Though not up to date anymore, this book nevertheless is certainly the wittiest Kiss bio out there, chock full of funny anecdotes, tons of historical details, and interesting pictures. The glossy pages and sleek design only add to the well-written and funny text. With this book, Kiss becomes a funny phenomenon to celebrate. I guarantee you will laugh. Interesting discography and videography too.
